Nvidia has raised the price of its Shield TV Pro streaming box by $100, from $199.99 to $299.99, effective October 2. The device, originally released in 2019, still runs on the aging Tegra X1+ processor. Nvidia attributes the increase to substantially higher component costs, especially memory, across the industry.
The two Ars Technica reports covering the move are identical in substance. They note that Nvidia is not merely a victim of AI-driven supply constraints: as a major seller of AI accelerators and GPUs, the company has contributed to the very demand that is pushing memory and storage prices up. The reports also point to similar price increases for game consoles, including the PS5 Pro rising from $699.99 to $899.99.
The Shield TV Pro has been in short supply recently, and the higher price may make manufacturing more viable for Nvidia. However, the reports suggest the $300 price makes the device a harder sell for casual streamers, unless they need its codec support or Plex server capability. The box remains out of stock on Nvidia's store but is available at Best Buy at the new price.
