OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Astra, calling it its most intelligent and aligned model yet. The company says it achieves state-of-the-art results in computer use, coding, cybersecurity, and science. Latent Space's coverage agrees, describing it as OpenAI's biggest LLM launch and a new SOTA for computer use and coding.

The two outlets differ on economics and oversight. Latent Space calculates that Astra costs 2.5x more per token than previous models, but is much cheaper per task because it completes more work autonomously; the publication also describes the model as less monitorable. OpenAI, by contrast, emphasizes stronger safeguards and alignment.

Both agree on the safety milestone: Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical level of cybersecurity capability under the company's Preparedness Framework. OpenAI says it deployed stronger safeguards for this release. Latent Space, after spending over 20 billion tokens exploring the model, frames Astra as an automated AI engineer that can be hired for under $6 an hour.
