As robotaxis move toward mainstream use, a small group of academics is focusing on an awkward problem: passengers having sex in the back seat. The researchers argue that autonomous vehicles, with no driver present, could become tempting spaces for intimate activity, creating practical headaches for operators.

The concerns go beyond simple embarrassment. Sexual encounters could soil interiors, require expensive cleaning, and expose companies to liability. There is also worry about how the public would react if robotaxis gained a reputation as mobile hookup spots, potentially undermining trust in the technology.

One researcher involved in the work invoked the infamous "Bang Bus" porn series to explain what the industry should avoid. The academics are now exploring possible deterrents, such as seat sensors, interior cameras, or rules enforced through ride-hailing apps. The goal, they say, is to design robotaxis that discourage misuse without making paying passengers feel surveilled or unwelcome.
