AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial AI research lab co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su, while the World Labs team will continue its work on AI model research.
The deal centers on "world models," which generate, reconstruct, and simulate 3D environments from text, image, and video inputs, rather than predicting the next word like large language models. The Register frames the acquisition as a hedge that LLMs might be a dead end, and notes the approach has prominent proponents including Yann LeCun. It adds that Li has a more nuanced view, arguing that language alone isn't sufficient for model development. TechCrunch cautions that "world model" remains a loosely defined term. World Labs launched its first commercial product, Marble, in 2025, allowing users to create interactive 3D worlds from a prompt.
AMD says the acquisition will strengthen its ability to develop AI hardware, software, and systems around emerging models. TechCrunch reports that AMD and World Labs already formed an inference optimization-and-training partnership last year, and Li appeared at AMD's CES presentation earlier this year. The Register and TechCrunch both tie the deal to AMD's competitive position against Nvidia, which already offers open-weight world models like Cosmos.
The announcement comes as AMD briefly joined the $1 trillion club, according to CNBC, which also quoted Jim Cramer saying the company's run under CEO Lisa Su is far from over. That commentary focuses on AMD's stock performance and agentic AI, not the World Labs deal. The acquisition is one of several large AI deals recently, including Nvidia's nearly $13 billion agreement to acquire Hugging Face.
