AMD has announced plans to bring its FSR 4 upscaling technology to handheld gaming devices by the end of 2026, according to a statement from consumer chip chief Jack Huynh reported by The Elec. The move expands FSR 4 beyond desktop graphics cards, where it was originally introduced, to APUs, gaming laptops, and handhelds.
However, AMD has not clarified whether existing handhelds will receive the upgrade or if it will be limited to new hardware. Huynh mentioned both "launching existing APUs and new product lines," but The Elec suggests a new APU and a lightweight FSR 4 model are coming. Earlier, AMD executive David McAfee had said that FSR 4 requires sufficient compute power, implying some older chips may not qualify.
Valve has said it is working with AMD to bring FSR 4 to the Steam Machine's console-grade APU, but has not committed to the same for the Steam Deck. AMD did not respond to a request for clarification. The announcement leaves handheld gamers uncertain about whether their current devices will benefit.
