Anthropic announced it is creating a public benefit fund, committing 5% of its shares to a wholly-owned entity within the company. The firm says this gives it increased flexibility and scale to support societal good, and it may contribute an additional 2% for every 50% increase in Anthropic's value.

The fund's intended uses include large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to study AI's impact on the job market, but says bolder approaches may be needed given the pace of AI progress.

The announcement comes as the AI industry faces increasingly negative public sentiment. CEO Dario Amodei has described it as 'fundamentally a crisis of trust.' Anthropic says it will share more information about the fund's structure and governance in the coming months.
