Anthropic has released Sonnet 5.5, the latest version of its mid-tier AI model. The company says the new model is about 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5 and consumes tokens at a slower rate, making it cheaper to run for everyday tasks such as coding and document work.
Sonnet sits below Opus in Anthropic's model lineup, but the company's benchmarks indicate Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5 on agentic coding. Anthropic attributes this to Sonnet's ability to spawn multiple agents without exceeding cost limits, making it more practical in certain workflows.
The company also says Sonnet 5.5 has cyber capabilities comparable to Opus 5, and because of that it will be subject to the same cyber safeguards applied to its Fable and Opus models. Anthropic plans to release a new version of its smallest model, Haiku, in the coming weeks.
The launch continues a busy period for AI model releases. Last week OpenAI introduced updated versions of its mid-tier and budget models, Sol and Luna, and Meta announced a model tied to an upcoming smart glasses feature.
