Anthropic published a report Friday detailing how its workforce has changed over the past year as the company has “thoroughly molded its workflows around AI.” The share of junior-level employees in technical departments dropped from 21% to 14%, and junior technical hires fell even more sharply, from 27% to 9%. Technical teams now make up 56% of the workforce, down from 61%, which Anthropic attributes both to normal scaling of business functions and to coding tools letting non-technical staff build software themselves.
The report also found that meeting time per employee is up 20% compared to a year ago, and up 16% for technical contributors. Anthropic says this reflects the importance of “human trust and accountability,” with employees describing face-to-face coordination as indispensable. In an April 2026 survey, 27% of employees said they had become more productive because of Claude, while 20% said their job had shifted “from actually doing work to managing Claudes.” One employee compared that management work to babysitting, noting that each Claude demands attention like a child.
Anthropic argues that human attention and judgment are becoming a “bottleneck” as Claude produces a “deluge” of text that needs to be read and organized. The company says AI adoption has led to more code per person, more sales per rep, and more contracts processed, though it acknowledges that “more code does not necessarily mean better code or business impact.” It also says it has not found signs that code quality is declining. The report is based on a single company’s experience, but Anthropic suggests its trends could indicate how AI will shift work organization, hiring, and labor demand across the economy.
