Anthropic has asked a federal court in Washington, D.C., to rehear its appeal of the Pentagon's decision to blacklist its AI models. The company filed the petition on Tuesday, arguing that the designation is extraordinary and unjustified.
The dispute stems from Anthropic's refusal to allow its models to be used for mass surveillance of Americans or lethal autonomous warfare, and its public explanation of those safety commitments. The Pentagon had labeled the company a national-security "supply chain risk" as a result.
A divided panel of judges previously upheld the blacklisting. Anthropic's attorneys contend that the ruling conflicts with the company's role in helping defend the nation, and they are now seeking a rehearing before the full court.
