Apple is reportedly partnering with LG on a new line of smart home devices, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by TechCrunch, Engadget, and The Verge. The lineup is said to include a smart lock, thermostat, video doorbell, indoor and outdoor security cameras, and a floodlight camera. All three outlets agree the products will carry LG branding, not Apple's, and are designed to work with Apple's upcoming smart home hub, which is expected to be announced on October 13.
The sources differ on timing and technical details. TechCrunch says the devices could be announced, if not formally released, next week, while Engadget reports that the LG accessories won't hit the market for "at least a few more months" despite an expected unveiling. The Verge adds that several devices will support Thread and Matter protocols, and that the door lock includes an ultra-wideband feature for automatic unlocking. Engadget also notes that a revamped HomePod Mini and Apple TV set-top box may accompany the hub.
All three reports frame the collaboration as part of Apple's broader push into smart home technology. TechCrunch suggests the move could be read as a swipe at Amazon's smart home offerings, including Ring cameras. Engadget notes that LG has been an Apple partner before, supplying panels for Mac monitors and offering Apple software on its smart TVs, but this would mark a significant expansion into co-developed consumer hardware.
