Apple Intelligence is now integrated into the iPhone's Shortcuts app, letting users describe an automation in plain English and have the system assemble it. The feature works on iOS 27 on supported iPhones, and Engadget's Adnan Ahmed calls it one of the few places where Apple's AI genuinely improves the experience.
In practice, the AI rarely refuses to generate a shortcut, but it often produces something that needs adjustment. Ahmed's test of a shortcut to switch the screen to grayscale when opening Instagram worked on launch but failed to restore color on exit, and a request to turn off the phone at 20 percent battery simply locked the screen. The article advises tapping Edit after generation to double-check the actions before relying on them.
Beyond automation, Shortcuts can invoke Apple Intelligence models or ChatGPT for text generation and data processing. One example fetches an article from a URL, summarizes it, and saves it to Notes, and can be exposed through the Share Sheet. Results are still hit or miss, but when they work, they can save meaningful time for users who want to streamline repetitive tasks.
