Apple has quietly clarified that the new texture and grain controls for Photographic Styles are far more limited on older iPhones than its initial announcement implied. The features, introduced alongside the iPhone 18 lineup, let users adjust skin texture and add film grain when editing photos. But according to The Verge, Apple now says these controls are available only for "photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on iPhone Duo."
The confusion began with a September 11 press release that listed many older iPhone models as supporting the new controls. That wording suggested owners of iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 devices would get full access. Apple has since updated its releases to specify that older phones can only use the controls when editing photos taken on the newest Pro hardware. The original footnote, still preserved on other sites, said the features would be available on iOS 27 across a wide range of devices.
Hands-on testing supports the narrower interpretation. A Reddit user on an iPhone 16 Pro Max could adjust texture and grain only on sample photos taken with an iPhone 18 Pro, and The Verge's Andrew Liszewski saw the same behavior on his iPhone 16 Pro. The controls did not appear for photos he captured himself. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for clarification, leaving older-device owners with a feature that works only on someone else's photos.
