Apple's Image Playground, launched in December 2024, is the company's on-device image generator for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It is built into apps such as Messages, Keynote, and Freeform, and can also create Genmoji — personalized emoji made with Apple Intelligence. The tool requires an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, an iPhone 16 or later, an iPad with an M1 chip or later (or the iPad Mini with A17 Pro), or a Mac with at least an M1 chip.

The latest version, shipping with iOS 27, adds a notable change: instead of picking from a handful of preset styles, users can describe the visual style they want in natural language. The new 'Any Style' option accepts virtually any visual approach. The update also brings touch-based editing, so you can select part of an image — say, a door on a cabin — and ask the app to change its color or move the selection.

Other additions include the ability to create Contact Posters and Lock Screen wallpapers. The app still supports starting from a text prompt, a face from your photo library, or an existing photo as the basis for a new image. Once an image is finished, it can be saved, shared, or turned into a Genmoji for use like a standard emoji.
