Apple is reportedly working on a smart home security camera that would not record video. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, speaking on the Power On podcast, the device—codenamed J450—would use a low frame rate and on-device AI to analyze a room and send users text descriptions of what happened, such as someone entering a space. Gurman describes the camera as a small cylinder that looks like a metal chapstick, and says it would be a companion to Apple’s rumored J490 smart home display.

The approach differs from conventional security cameras, which store or stream footage. Instead, the J450 would process everything on-device, using an image sensor with embedded AI similar to what Apple is reportedly exploring for camera-equipped AirPods. Gurman says the camera would include facial recognition, but users would receive only text alerts—no video to review or store.

Apple Home already offers a related feature called “Detect Activity” for HomeKit Secure Video cameras, which stops video recording while continuing to track motion. The rumored J450 would take that idea further by making text-only monitoring the core product. The report is based on a single source, so details such as the camera’s design, capabilities, and launch timing remain unconfirmed.
