Apple TV's Formula 1 coverage will support Dolby Atmos starting with the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which runs from October 22 through October 25. This is the first time Apple has introduced Atmos support for a sports offering, according to Engadget.
Apple's F1 package, launched after it secured exclusive US broadcast rights last year, includes races, practice sessions, sprint races, and pre- and post-race coverage. Subscribers also get access to onboard cameras, team radios, and live telemetry through a dedicated channel in the Apple TV app.
Dolby Laboratories' John Couling said Apple can use F1's existing trackside microphones and sensors for Atmos production, avoiding the need for new hardware. The spatial audio format makes sound seem to come from different parts of the room, but it requires a TV or audio system that supports the technology.
The upgrade gives Apple's live sports package a distinctive feature as it competes with larger streaming services. Apple TV's library is not as expansive as some rivals, and this move suggests the company is using premium production quality to strengthen its sports offering.
