AstroForge, a company focused on space resource operations, will outfit its next spacecraft with an unusual commander: a compact transformer-based AI model. The spacecraft, called Autonomy-1, is expected to hand operational control to this onboard model, according to a TechCrunch report.

The shift matters for the economics of spaceflight. If a probe can make decisions in real time, it needs fewer ground operators and can keep working through long communication lags. That is especially valuable for missions beyond Earth orbit, where signal delays can stretch to hours and real-time commands are impractical.

Autonomy-1 is an early trial of this approach. If the AI successfully manages the spacecraft, it could push other commercial operators to adopt similar onboard intelligence, cutting overhead and enabling more ambitious missions without proportional increases in ground staffing.
