When Away launched its Carry On in 2016, the polycarbonate suitcase with an ejectable battery became a viral travel accessory. A decade later, the Series 3 marks a deliberate shift: the battery is gone. Sarah Amidi, Away's senior vice president of brand, told WIRED that the company never liked being called 'smart luggage' and that the battery solved a pain point from an era before ubiquitous charging options. Removing it also shaved weight and freed up room inside the shell.
Rather than redesigning the exterior, Away focused on refining what already worked. The Series 3 launch was reportedly delayed because the product didn't initially meet internal expectations. The new WhisperGlide wheels add an extra ball bearing for smoother, quieter rolling, while a StopLock Brakes system lets users lock the wheels on inclines. The Infinite Height Trolley handle offers five times more stopping points, and small hooks on the handle can hold up to 11 pounds. Interior covers now open outward, there are more pockets, and a pouch accommodates a Bluetooth tracker. Away also introduced personalization options, including removable handles and wheels in different styles.
Alongside the luggage, Away unveiled the Signature Bags collection—totes, weekenders, backpacks, duffles, and underseat bags. According to WIRED, the nylon is lighter and softer than previous versions, with an external laptop compartment for quicker access at security and hidden pockets for frequently used items. The overall verdict from WIRED is that the Series 3 offers nothing groundbreaking; many features already exist in competitors' bags, and Away appears to be playing catch-up. But the company is betting that a well-regarded product with thoughtful tweaks—not batteries—will keep its cult following loyal.
