Bluesky has applied to make ".bsky" an internet domain suffix, CEO Toni Schneider said Monday. The company's application will be published by ICANN on October 7, 2026, and the approval process is expected to take 18 to 24 months, according to TechCrunch.
Should the application succeed, Bluesky users could eventually replace long handles such as @sarahp.bsky.social with shorter addresses like sarahp.bsky. The company also sees room to turn profiles into fuller personal home pages that establish a user's online presence, rather than just a bio and post history.
Bluesky has not finalized how the domains would be requested, registered, or distributed. It said it has no plans to sell the domains or otherwise make money from them, a notable stance because domain registration could be a profitable business for a startup that has raised substantial funding but does not yet generate ad revenue. COO Rose Wang said selling domains would conflict with Bluesky's belief in the open web, where users own their online identity rather than rent it from a platform.
