Brian K. Vaughan, the comic writer behind 'Saga' and 'Y: The Last Man,' spoke with WIRED at New York Comic Con about his next project and the state of the entertainment business. He and artist Cliff Chiang announced 'Roam,' a new ongoing superhero series set in the distant future, where everyone gets to be a superhero only while young. Vaughan said the book is his first true superhero comic and that the pair deliberately kept details vague to preserve the kind of surprise he felt watching 'The Matrix.'
On the business side, Vaughan expressed deep concern about AI's impact on creative industries. He said friends working in previsualization and storyboarding are losing jobs, and he worries that editors are also at risk. While he believes there will always be demand for bespoke human-made stories, he described the future as 'terrifying and unknowable,' noting that AI is also a component in 'Roam.'
Vaughan also touched on 'Dune: Part Three,' which he cowrote with director Denis Villeneuve. He called the film 'a fucking beautiful movie' and his favorite of the three, but he downplayed his own role, saying Denis's true cowriter is Frank Herbert and that his contributions were modest. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18.
