Discord is preparing to test a new Game Mode designed to ease the strain its desktop app puts on a computer while games are running. Screenshots circulating over the weekend show a toggle described as reducing Discord's CPU and GPU usage during gameplay. The company confirmed on X that the experimental mode will start rolling out next week and said it aims to add more resource-saving features over time.

The feature could help gamers who run Discord alongside demanding titles, potentially freeing up processing power for the game itself. But Discord is built on Electron, a framework that relies on Chromium, the same engine behind Chrome and other browsers. Chromium is not known for being especially efficient, so while Game Mode may deliver noticeable improvements, the app's underlying architecture may limit how far Discord can streamline its resource consumption.
