A WIRED smart-home editor who used the Ecobee3 Lite for eight years says the device remains a solid, no-frills choice for people who mainly want phone control and scheduling. The thermostat includes a touchscreen and works with optional room sensors, but skips extras like occupancy detection and a built-in speaker.
The original Lite has since been rebranded as the Essential and sells for $140 new. During Ecobee's fall sale, however, a refurbished unit is available for $120 with free shipping and the same three-year warranty as a new model. The promotion ends October 21.
The editor notes that Ecobee's broader security and smart-home ecosystem can be buggy, but heartily recommends the thermostat on its own. Refurbished Enhanced and Premium models are also discounted, along with packages that include security accessories.
