Figma is broadening its support for the Model Context Protocol even as co-founder Dylan Field voices doubts about the standard. At the company's first Config conference in India, Figma announced 20 new MCP partners, including Amp, ClickUp, Linear, Mistral, Notion, and Sarvam Agents.
Field has been publicly critical of MCP, noting that Anthropic, the protocol's creator, does not expose its own artifacts or cloud resources through MCP. He argued that the debate is often framed as open versus closed, while what he called asymmetric context sharing is ignored. At a media briefing, Field said MCP has "tons of room for improvement" and is "advantaged more to frontier labs," while reiterating that he wants users to be able to use their Figma data.
Figma's CEO added that the company is not fully open because exposing more data through MCP increases the risk of abuse. He acknowledged that most users have no malicious intent, but said Figma still has to consider those risks. Field later said Figma plans to support Pi, an open-source tool whose co-creator had complained about Figma's lack of support for it.
