Foldable phone durability is unpredictable in real use, and the big fold-count numbers from manufacturers are laboratory results, not a countdown to failure. Samsung Display's 500,000-fold test covered only the OLED panel, not the hinge components, flex cables, or other parts that can fail in a real phone. A device can develop problems long before reaching its rated folding mileage.

Keeping a hinge working comes down to mundane habits: keep grit away, clear debris before closing the phone, and don't force the mechanism. IP48 ratings block solid objects 1mm or larger but do not make foldables dustproof. Motorola warns that dust can shorten hinge life and advises against using pressurized air dusters on the display.

Users should watch for changes in how the hinge feels—harder movement, new grinding noises, or failure to open normally—rather than counting folds. Ignoring those warning signs can be expensive: Samsung currently lists a Galaxy Z Fold8 inner-screen module replacement at $579.
