General Motors is rolling out a new software experience for its upcoming Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, and the update includes a fresh look for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That puts the phone-mirroring systems back in the spotlight for GM, which had made a point of removing them from its electric vehicles.

Despite that earlier EV decision, the company is not bringing CarPlay back to those models; rather, the systems never disappeared from its gasoline-powered truck lineup. The new design applies to the trucks' infotainment interface, giving drivers a revised version of the familiar phone projection tools.

The Verge notes that GM's latest move highlights a split strategy: while the automaker has touted its own software approach for EVs, it continues to support the popular phone-mirroring features in at least some of its combustion-engine vehicles.
