Google has begun rolling out "Call for Me," an experimental feature for Pixel 11 in the US that lets Gemini place and conduct phone calls to businesses. The AI introduces itself, navigates automated menus, waits on hold, and converses with a person, while the user watches a live transcript and can jump in at any time.
Availability is narrow: paid Gemini subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google Public Beta on Pixel 11. All four outlets agree on these conditions. The Verge and Engadget frame it as an early preview, while TechCrunch points out it follows last year's "Ask for Me" and older Google calling tools; WIRED notes it revives the idea behind Duplex, which was discontinued.
The business significance: AI agents may increasingly handle routine customer-service calls, and businesses are also testing AI to answer them. But WIRED raises open questions—how Gemini handles accents, noisy environments, or politely ending a call when a request can't be met—and a Google spokesperson said that's exactly what the experiment is meant to test.
