Huawei has introduced an add-on camera for its Mate 90 Pro Max that includes its own image sensor and a 24-240mm zoom lens. The Ruiying Z10 is priced at ¥5,999 (about $895), positioning it as a premium accessory that costs more than some flagship phones. It follows a trend among Chinese Android makers of offering add-on teleconverter lenses, but goes further by adding a true zoom and a sensor larger than the one inside the phone.
The accessory's 1-inch-type, 50-megapixel RYYB sensor means attaching the lens effectively overhauls the phone's camera hardware rather than just adding glass. It weighs 346 grams and attaches directly to compatible models, avoiding the need for an intermediary case. Huawei markets it as more portable than most mirrorless cameras and potentially allowed in venues that ban cameras.
The business strategy appears aimed at enthusiasts rather than the mass market. The high price and limited compatibility—only the collector's edition of the Mate 90 Pro Max and the Mate 90 RS—suggest Huawei is testing demand for modular, high-end photography gear within its ecosystem. The lens uses the phone for power, processing, and software, making it a hybrid between a phone accessory and a standalone camera.
