Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, its first update to the new operating system, to fix an issue that could cause the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max to freeze or restart without warning. The problem tended to appear when Face ID failed to authenticate, such as when unlocking apps or features like the Passwords app or private Safari tabs. A ZDNET writer who owns an iPhone 18 Pro reported experiencing both a temporary freeze and a full restart while using Face ID to sign into an app.
The update also addresses two other bugs: a color artifact on photos taken at 2x with the 18 Pro and Pro Max under certain lighting, and an unresponsive screen that could occur when opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time. The latter fix applies to all iPhones running iOS 27, not just the newest models.
Alongside the iPhone update, Apple released matching 27.0.1 versions for iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS, describing them as bug-fix releases without specifying what they fixed. Apple's security release page listed no security patches for these updates. The company also did not explain the root cause of the Face ID restart glitch, though reports from 9to5Mac suggest the crash is triggered when users tap "Try Face ID Again" after an initial authentication failure. Apple previously issued a similar restart fix for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 via WatchOS 27.0.1.
