Apple's push to embed AI into the iPhone has made the technology harder to avoid. According to Engadget, iOS 27 removes the simple universal toggle that previously disabled Apple Intelligence in one step. Users on capable devices—iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or iPhone 16 or newer—must now turn off individual features scattered across the Settings app. Those still on iOS 26 can use the older, simpler switch under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.

Among the options, Siri's AI revamp can be reversed. Users can turn off Siri entirely, then re-enable it in "Classic" mode for basic tasks like timers and music. AI-generated summaries for Messages, Mail, and notifications can each be toggled off separately, as can notification prioritization. Other AI extras, such as Smart Reply in Mail, voicemail suggestions, and calling-related information, have their own switches buried in the relevant app settings.

Notably, some of the most prominent AI features are hidden outside the usual Siri settings. Writing Tools and image generation—including Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand—can only be blocked through Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. The same menu also lets users block Math Assistance and extensions that hand requests off to services like ChatGPT. The result is that users retain considerable control over Apple Intelligence, but only if they know where to look.
