iOS 27 brings CarPlay its most noticeable update in years, but exactly what drivers get depends on the hardware running it. Engadget reports that the new version adds video apps, a mini-player with a progress bar, better wireless reliability, more accurate GPS, new wallpapers, and route-sharing that can factor EV charging stops into navigation. Video is safety-limited: playback only works when the vehicle is parked and switches to audio-only once the car starts moving. Automakers also have to implement support for the video function, so it may not appear in every car immediately.
The bigger split is Siri AI. Apple’s upgraded assistant in CarPlay can use personal context from messages and calendar to answer questions and understand natural-language mapping requests, but it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 or later. An iPhone 14 owner, by contrast, can enjoy the media and reliability updates without gaining the new Siri experience. Engadget also notes that Siri AI will not be available in the European Union because of local regulations.
The update itself is available for iPhone 11 and newer, which means older CarPlay users will simply keep their current experience. For Apple, the compatibility structure ties the signature CarPlay upgrade to recent hardware, making Siri AI a differentiator that older iPhones cannot reach.
