The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are best understood as a refinement of last year's design, not a redesign. Engadget's comparison notes the aluminum unibody and display sizes carry over, while the most visible change is a smaller Dynamic Island made possible by under-display Face ID technology.
The headline camera upgrade is a 48-megapixel main sensor with a variable aperture that can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. That allows automatic or manual control over depth of field and light intake. The ultra-wide and telephoto cameras are unchanged, but video gains 4K/60 Cinematic mode and new post-hoc background effects.
Under the hood, the A20 Pro chip moves to a 2-nanometer process with 50% more memory bandwidth. The Pro Max gets a larger battery boost but also a noticeable weight increase, while the standard Pro is only slightly heavier. New color options and Photographic Styles 3 round out the package.
For business implications, the incremental nature suggests Apple is leaning on camera and chip improvements to justify higher prices, rather than a form-factor change. The identical camera hardware across both sizes may also simplify purchasing decisions for professionals.
