Apple's published repair estimates for the upcoming iPhone Duo show that the folding phone's most vulnerable component commands a premium. Without AppleCare Plus, replacing the inner display costs $999, while "other damage" repairs run $1,499. The phone itself starts at $1,999, meaning a single screen repair can consume half the device's value.
The gap between insured and uninsured repairs is stark. With AppleCare Plus, inner display repairs drop to $99, and battery service is free. But the coverage is not cheap: AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year, or a flat $399. For a $1,999 phone, that premium represents about 20% of the purchase price.
The pricing structure pushes customers toward Apple's service plans, a recurring revenue stream that has become increasingly important to hardware makers. It also raises questions about the long-term economics of foldable devices, where repair costs can rival the price of a new handset. The iPhone Duo launches October 23, with preorders starting Friday.
