Jaguar has taken the wraps off the Type 01, the finished version of the divisive Type 00 concept and the centerpiece of its all-electric reinvention. Revealed at an event in New York City, the production model keeps the prototype's dramatic low roofline, long hood, and huge 23-inch wheels, but adds extra doors and a slightly softened front end. Jaguar calls it a "bold grand tourer that never arrives unnoticed," and the design remains unmistakable.
Under the skin, the Type 01 is a technical showcase. It is the most powerful Jaguar road car ever, with a tri-motor setup producing up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm, launching from 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds. The 850-volt architecture and 118-kWh usable battery deliver a claimed EPA range of up to 400 miles, with 200 miles of range recoverable in 13 minutes on a 350 kW charger. The cabin features a 24-inch OLED display, a central touchscreen for climate and audio controls, and a digital rearview mirror replacing the rear windscreen.
Pricing is central to Jaguar's strategy. At around $170,000, the Type 01 sits below electric rivals from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bentley, in what managing director Rawdon Glover calls a "Goldilocks zone" for luxury EVs. The launch follows a turbulent period for the brand, including a controversial no-car rebrand, the departure of chief creative officer Gerry McGovern, and a long stretch without selling any new vehicles. Jaguar's bet is that the finished Type 01 will make sense of the chaos—and convince buyers that the luxury EV market has room for a bold, expensive Jaguar.
