JLR has quietly unveiled the Range Rover Sport Electric, positioned between the launch of the flagship Range Rover Electric and the upcoming Jaguar Type 01 reveal. The model matters commercially: Range Rover Sport sales often run close to, or slightly above, the flagship Range Rover, and JLR announced earlier this month that it will cut 4,000 jobs over the next two years.
The Sport Electric uses the same powertrain as the Range Rover Electric—two 260-kW motors producing up to 550 PS and 850 Nm of torque—but with different tuning and a lower starting price of £109,810. JLR claims the SUV has the stiffest body and lowest center of gravity of any Range Rover Sport, plus a torque response 50 percent faster than the Range Rover Electric. Range is rated up to 374 miles on the WLTP standard, roughly 320 miles under EPA testing, and 800-volt architecture can add 136 miles in 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
Standard equipment includes all-wheel steering, electronic Active Roll Control, and off-road capability such as wading through 900 mm of water and climbing 45-degree inclines. The electric model will compete with the Porsche Cayenne Electric, BMW iX xDrive60, and Lotus Eletre 600, though the Porsche starts £20,000 cheaper. JLR will continue offering plug-in hybrid, gas, and diesel versions of the Sport alongside the EV.
