Mechanism has finally released its first Switch 2 case, the $49 Basecase, after several delays. The snap-on shell is designed to work with the company's existing lineup of mounts, letting owners attach the console to walls, monitor arms, or Mechanism's Gaming Pillow. Unlike the earlier Basegrip, this product adds drop protection and comfort features.
The Verge's review found that the case fits snugly, clamping near the console's USB-C port, and avoids the loose sections and flex common among rival thin plastic cases. It also includes interchangeable Joy-Con grips of different sizes, plus a rear plate that can be swapped for custom 3D-printed versions. Mechanism shared example prints with Lego pegs and game cartridge slots, and has posted the 3D printer files on Makerworld and Printables.
The case cannot be used with Nintendo's official dock, so Mechanism ships a USB-C adapter that connects to the dock's video-out port. The review says installing it is not as easy as marketed, though it eventually worked. Owners of third-party docks from Jsaux or Genki can skip the adapter entirely. The review notes that the Basecase addresses specific failure points, such as adding a rubber lip on the grips to prevent consoles from slipping when grabbed by the controller. With only this one source, there are no conflicting views to compare.
