Meta has reversed its reported decision to reject ads for Alex Gibney's upcoming documentary about Elon Musk. A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch that the rejection was an error and that the ads are being restored. The reversal comes after The Hollywood Reporter said Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and X had all refused to run paid ads promoting the trailer.
The other platforms have not publicly changed course. TechCrunch notes that X's rejection is unsurprising given Musk's recent post about Gibney, while TikTok and YouTube reportedly cited political-content restrictions. Bleecker Street, the film's U.S. distributor, told The Hollywood Reporter it is appealing the rejections.
The documentary, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, has drawn critical acclaim, including a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Universal Pictures initially appeared to waver on international distribution over fears of angering the Trump administration, but later said it will release the film in theaters while still determining its strategy.
