Microsoft is updating its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscriptions to let plan members share Copilot and other AI features. According to an email seen by The Verge, subscribers will be able to extend AI benefits to up to five other people on the same plan, and manage AI access for younger family members. Individual AI feature limits will be replaced by a single usage allowance that can be applied across advanced AI features, with the option to buy more usage.
The trade-off is in cloud storage. Currently each family member gets 1TB of OneDrive storage; after the change, the plan will have a shared 2TB pool. Microsoft says this provides flexibility if one member exceeds 1TB, but the report notes it looks like a way to push subscribers toward buying additional storage. The new storage terms take effect after the first renewal following May 2, 2027, and some existing subscribers may qualify for transitional bonus storage.
The announcement comes about a year after Microsoft 365 Premium launched at $19.99 per month, combining Copilot Pro and family subscription benefits. The shift to a shared AI usage allowance could also mean some subscribers pay more depending on how heavily they use Copilot. The source does not provide details on pricing for additional AI usage or storage.
