Microsoft is formalizing its interest in the recent wave of AI-assisted game decompilation and recompilation. The company has created Xbox Labs, a small group tasked with experimenting with these community-driven ports and remixes. The move follows fan projects that translated Windows PC builds to Apple Silicon, ran games in browsers, and merged code from different titles.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in a memo that these experiments challenge assumptions about the link between software and hardware, and the boundary between creation and play. She described outcomes like easier access and new life for old games as "unmistakably good" even when they strain business models. The group will build in the open and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.
Sharma also framed games as a promising workload for AI agents, noting that people spend over 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games. The company plans to share tools and learnings with developers. The article notes a lingering question: how Microsoft will handle unauthorized decompiles of its own IP, a topic the company did not address in time for publication.
