Mirror Particle, a two-year-old San Francisco startup, is trying to predict consumer behavior with a foundation model built from scratch. The company argues that the current approach — prompting or fine-tuning large language models to role-play as a target demographic — is fundamentally limited. CEO Abhivyakti Ahuja, who studied neuroscience and computer science and previously worked at Amazon Robotics, says LLMs model written language, but humans are shaped by visual perception, spatial reasoning, and social intelligence.
Mirror Particle combines client customer data, current events, pop culture, and social media to model a demographic segment as a system that evolves over time. The focus is on revealed behavior — what people actually do — rather than self-reported survey answers. The startup says its engine also provides the 'why' behind predictions, including motivations and constraints, to help brands make decisions.
In an early pilot, a pet food brand asked what imagery to put on packaging. Mirror Particle found the brand was asking the wrong question: the imagery didn't matter, and sales were limited by the brand's mass-market perception. The company's initial go-to-market is market research and brand strategy, where budgets already exist. It has raised an angel round, is close to closing its first venture round, and will compete in Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 next week.
