Neon has announced it will make a film based on the SCP Foundation, the collaborative online horror-writing project, directly positioning itself against A24's previously announced adaptation. Unlike A24, which reportedly did not contact the SCP Wiki team or commit to the project's required Creative Commons license, Neon says it proactively reached out and will release the film under the CC BY-SA license.
The SCP Wiki staff is not involved in the film's writing or production, is not receiving compensation, and does not officially endorse such projects. Still, the admin team issued a statement praising Neon's communication and commitment to the license and the spirit of collaboration. The announcement appears to be a deliberate PR move following backlash to A24's handling of the property.
Neon says the movie will arrive in theaters in 2027, which the report suggests points to a quick turnaround and a potentially low-budget production. The business challenge is that a ShareAlike license may make it harder to profit from the film, but Neon appears willing to accept that trade-off to win over the SCP community.
