Netflix has announced The Conjuring: Unspoken, a narrative horror game set in The Conjuring universe that will launch exclusively on the service on October 13. Players use their phone as a controller to investigate the reportedly haunted Red Lion Inn as demonologist Francesca Noakes, using an electromagnetic field reader, infrared camera, and spirit box. Netflix says familiarity with the Conjuring movies is needed to play, though a few familiar faces appear in the game.
The game was developed by Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Quarry. That studio announced in August that it planned to lay off up to 75 staffers, and a former employee said on LinkedIn that more than 70 people would be leaving. The new release follows June's horror title Unhinged, which was made by Night School, a studio Netflix shut down in August.
Netflix continues to expand its TV-game lineup with exclusive, phone-controlled experiences, but the timing highlights instability among the studios producing them. The Verge is the sole source here, so there are no conflicting reports to compare.
