The New York City Council has issued a subpoena to Elon Musk and SpaceXAI as part of an investigation into artificial intelligence safety risks. The subpoena, sent Monday, requires Musk or another representative of the company to testify in the council's inquiry.

The investigation will assess whether fast-emerging risks to public safety, cybersecurity, economic stability, privacy, consumers, and businesses warrant immediate legislative action to protect New Yorkers. Correspondence signed by Council Speaker Julie Menin and council attorney Nwamaka Ejebe outlines the scope of the inquiry.

The council's findings could shape whether new local laws are needed to address AI's potential harms. The subpoena marks a notable escalation in New York City's oversight of the AI industry.
