OpenAI has begun rolling out Dots, the always-on AI agents announced at its recent developer conference. Each Dot runs on its own cloud instance, can browse the web, and may be granted access to a user's computer and apps. OpenAI is positioning them as productivity tools for automating routine tasks and handling long-running projects that could take weeks or months.
For consumers, Dots require a ChatGPT Pro subscription, which starts at $100 per month with higher tiers at $200 and $500. The feature is not initially available to Pro subscribers in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, or the UK, and access is rolling out gradually. Free, Go, and Plus accounts are excluded for now, while Business Premium and Enterprise users can use Dots if their workspace admin approves.
The first Dot is included with a Pro or Business Premium plan, and OpenAI says it will later offer paid options for additional Dots and scaling their output. During the first month, extended usage limits apply; after that, work performed by a Dot counts against the plan's allowance. Conversations and future texting with a Dot are free, but tasks completed through Codex, ChatGPT Work, or autonomously will be metered. Since Dots run on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most expensive model, the company's simultaneous launch of a $500 monthly Pro tier suggests heavy token usage is expected.
