AI startup Photon has raised $4.5 million in seed funding to help developers build agents that operate inside messaging platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp. The round was co-led by Gradient and A*, with participation from Vercel, HongShan, and others. The company's pitch is blunt: the mobile app era is ending, and agents delivered through apps people already use will take its place.
To make that point, Photon held a tongue-in-cheek "funeral" for mobile apps in San Francisco on September 17, complete with a coffin for app icons. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian said the shift from apps to agents is "directionally inevitable," even if it takes time. The startup offers a managed platform with a unified API, channel framework, CLI, and observability tools, letting developers deploy agents across SMS, email, voice, and messaging services.
Photon says its hosted platform has attracted over 40,000 developer sign-ups and that revenue grew 10x in four months, with less than 3% churn and messaging volume up 5x in the last month. The open-source version still accounts for 98% of usage, but the paid tiers add higher uptime and compliance certifications like SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA. Customers include Corgi Insurance, Rho, and Ditto, and integrations span Vercel, LangChain, and Tencent's QClaw.
Looking ahead, Tian sees growth in agent-to-agent communication, where a person's assistant could call on other agents to handle tasks like booking flights or hotels. For now, Photon's focus remains on connecting agents with humans, but the infrastructure could eventually serve as a layer for agents coordinating with each other.
