Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has formally accused Google of unfair practices in its dealings with local news publishers. The regulator claims Google leveraged its dominant position in search and news distribution to avoid sharing the data publishers needed to negotiate fair compensation for their content.
According to UOKiK president Tomasz Chróstny, clear rules specified what information Google was required to provide, yet the company still failed to comply. If the allegation is upheld, the authority could impose a fine of up to 10 percent of Google's annual revenue.
The Polish case echoes a broader European Commission investigation into whether Google adequately compensates publishers for articles used in its AI Overview and AI Mode features. Poland's regulator has also previously targeted Apple over its App Tracking Transparency feature, indicating a wider scrutiny of Big Tech practices in the country.
