Restate, a Berlin-based startup founded in 2022, has raised $20 million in Series A funding led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The company builds durable workflow infrastructure: an execution engine that keeps multistep processes running even after crashes or network interruptions. According to TechCrunch, that capability has become increasingly relevant as AI agents take on longer, less predictable tasks.
Restate co-founder Stephan Ewen said the technology was not originally built for agents but turned out to be a perfect match for the problems agents surface. Agent workflows need to be tracked and reproducible, and Restate has closed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts in recent months. Customers include Replit, and the startup also serves Fortune 500 companies in the financial sector. Restate built its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers rather than relying on an external database, which Ewen says makes the system fast and lightweight.
The fresh capital will go toward hiring a go-to-market team, adding engineers, and expanding Restate's San Francisco Bay Area office. The funding also positions Restate to compete with Temporal, a larger player in durable infrastructure that recently announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation. Ewen argues that durable execution will eventually be as common as databases, with use cases across companies of all sizes.
