Samsung's new Galaxy SmartTag 3 tracker starts at $30 for a single unit or $100 for a four-pack. It keeps the previous model's IP67 dust and water resistance while being about 35 percent more compact and 33 percent lighter, according to Engadget.

Inside, the tag adds Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, which Samsung says provides distance and direction guidance from up to 60 meters—roughly three times farther than before—and ultra-wideband for close-range precision. Battery life is rated at up to 550 days in normal mode or 790 days in power-saving mode. For the first time, the SmartTag 3 works with both iPhone and Android devices through the SmartThings app.

The marquee feature is pet activity monitoring: the tag records how much a pet moves, how long it is active, and how much it sleeps, with a dedicated tab in SmartThings. Engadget cautions that it is not a full fitness tracker, since it does not measure heart rate or VO2, and owners will need a collar with a spot sized for the tag. The SmartTag 3 launches in black or white in early November.
