September proved to be a blockbuster month for venture-backed startups, with 38 companies joining the unicorn board and collectively adding $71 billion in valuation. Semiconductors, financial services, and space technology led the pack by new counts, while biotech, AI infrastructure, AI training, security, and frontier labs also contributed. The breadth of industries underscores how broadly capital is flowing across deep-tech and applied sectors.

Geographically, the U.S. dominated with 21 new unicorns, followed by China with six and the U.K. with three. Canada, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, Italy, Finland, Germany, and Bulgaria each added one. Among existing board members, several saw sharp valuation increases: AI-engineering firm Cognition jumped to $48 billion from $26 billion in four months, data-center provider Crusoe reached $31 billion from $10 billion a year earlier, and Paris-based frontier lab Mistral climbed to $24.4 billion from $13.7 billion.

Notable new entrants include Austin-based semiconductor manufacturer Fab2, which raised a $500 million Series A at a $3.7 billion valuation, and Texas-based prediction-market platform OG, valued at $5 billion after a strategic partnership with Robinhood. In space tech, Munich's The Exploration Co. raised $450 million at a $2 billion valuation, while satellite firms Hubble Network, Open Cosmos, and EnduroSat also crossed the billion-dollar mark.

Through September, 311 companies have reached unicorn status this year, putting 2026 on track to be the second-highest year for new unicorn creation, trailing only the 2021 venture peak when more than 600 were minted. The sustained pace suggests venture capital remains active despite broader market uncertainty.
