Shopify is opening its checkout flow to browser-based AI agents. The company announced on Monday that agents can now complete purchases on Shopify merchant sites, expanding their role beyond searching for products and building carts. The update extends Shopify's existing WebMCP support from storefronts and carts to the checkout stage, including Shop Pay.
According to TechCrunch, the new capability relies on three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These allow an agent to read the checkout screen, change details such as the customer's address or delivery option, and place the order after the buyer authorizes it. Shopify said this works without screenshots or scraping webpages.
The move contrasts with retailers like Amazon and Adidas, which have reportedly been blocking AI agents from making purchases on their platforms. Shopify already offers a hosted Model Context Protocol server for server-to-server agent integration, while WebMCP targets agents operating in the buyer's browser. Both build on Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol, and top agents like Muse and Instinct have direct partnerships with Shopify, with the Instinct partnership announced the same day.
