Sony has added AI upscaling to the standard PS5 through a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). Patches for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are rolling out today, making them the first games to support the feature as an additional graphics option.
Both Engadget and The Verge report that QSSR stems from Sony's Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. Sony says it will offer the tech broadly to all PlayStation developers. The Verge adds that QSSR is "fundamentally a drop-in replacement" for titles that already support PSSR, according to Sony's Daniel Craig, though early Digital Foundry testing suggests it won't match the PS5 Pro's upscaled 4K output, with 1440p a more likely target.
The two outlets differ slightly in emphasis. Engadget quotes Insomniac's Mike Fitzgerald praising the pixel-level clarity and stability, and notes that Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition launches today with a $15 upgrade for existing owners. The Verge focuses on the technical trade-offs and the potential for QSSR to improve many games that have struggled with upscaling.
