Sony is moving more deliberately into the creator accessories business with the ECM-W5, a $400 wireless microphone kit that competes directly with DJI's popular low-cost options. The kit includes two transmitters and one receiver, with each transmitter offering 64GB of internal storage and 11 hours of battery life. The receiver connects to Sony Alpha cameras through the Multi Interface Shoe, drawing power and transferring data without extra cables.
The headline feature is 32-bit float recording, which lets creators capture quiet and loud audio without adjusting gain levels during recording. That simplifies post-production, and the internal storage doubles as a backup. The system also works with smartphones and PCs over USB-C, and supports wireless headphone monitoring via Bluetooth LE.
At $400, the ECM-W5 is significantly more expensive than DJI's $259 Mic 3 or $99 Mic Mini. The source notes that it is hard to see the kit as a compelling alternative unless buyers specifically want tight integration with Sony cameras. That suggests Sony is betting on its existing Alpha ecosystem rather than trying to undercut DJI on price. Pre-orders are open now, with shipping expected in November.
